On Monday, a delegation from the Syrian Negotiation Commission, led by its President Dr. Badr Jamous, held a virtual meeting from New York with several directors and heads of Syrian civil society organizations. Organized by the Local Councils Unit, the meeting aimed to foster consultation and broaden participation among Syrians, unifying their vision on advancing the political solution in line with international resolutions.

In addition to the President, the meeting was attended by the Commission’s Secretary-General, Safwan Akkash, and members Jamal Suleiman and Fadwa Al-Ajeeli.

Dr. Jamous discussed the visit of a delegation from the Syrian Negotiation Commission to New York, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly meetings. He underscored the delegation’s efforts to galvanize support and perspectives on the urgent need to advance the political solution process. The delegation aims to urge the United Nations to fully assume its responsibilities by establishing binding mechanisms for the strict and complete implementation of international resolutions, particularly Resolution 2254, and preventing any party from evading these commitments.

He also highlighted the Commission’s relentless efforts to keep the Syrian issue at the forefront of the international community’s agenda. The Commission seeks to persuade allied countries that other global issues should not overshadow the importance of finding a negotiated political solution to the Syrian crisis. The goal is to encourage these countries to adopt more effective positions, establish a clear roadmap, timeline, and mechanisms for implementing international resolutions pertaining to the Syrian issue.

Dr. Jamous emphasized the Commission’s dedication to expanding partnerships with all Syrians, stressing the importance of unity in addressing the political solution in accordance with international resolutions. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to opening the door for broad participation, especially from civil society, in building Syria’s future.

The President and members of the delegation listened attentively to the insights and perspectives of Syrian civil society groups. They discussed the most pressing needs of Syrians, their vision for the necessary roadmap, and reaffirmed their support for the Commission’s steadfast commitment to a political solution based on international resolutions, particularly the Geneva Communique and UN Resolutions 2254 and 2118.
