September 24, 2024
The Syrian Negotiation Committee delegation, headed by the committee’s president Dr. Badr Jamous and including the committee’s Secretary-General Safwan Akash and committee member Jamal Suleiman, met yesterday, Monday, in New York, with His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khalifi, Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, along with his accompanying delegation. They discussed the latest developments in the Syrian political process and ways to revive it to achieve a comprehensive political solution in accordance with UN Resolution 2254 and to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
Both sides explored methods to revive the political process and fully and rigorously implement UN Resolution 2254 in order to end the Syrian tragedy and achieve comprehensive stability. They emphasized the necessity of establishing binding and clear mechanisms for applying this resolution and preventing the regime from continuing to obstruct and evade the political process.
The committee president highlighted the importance of the Arab dimension in the political solution and the futility of normalizing relations with the Syrian regime, which continues to reject the political solution and evade all the obligations imposed on it by international resolutions. He pointed out that Syria is not safe, and it is impossible to consider the safe and voluntary return of Syrians to their towns and homes until the political solution is implemented and a transitional governing body is established to create a safe environment that guarantees the dignified and free return of Syrians to their homes.
He praised Qatar’s steadfast and supportive role for the Syrians and their just cause, both politically, diplomatically, and humanitarianly, noting the positive impact of this support on the Syrians. He also appreciated Qatar’s clear and consistent stance in support of a political solution to the Syrian issue in accordance with international resolutions.
He spoke about the necessity of holding the regime accountable for the war crimes it has committed and the importance of transitional justice in the subsequent phase, which is an inseparable part of a just political solution. He stressed that the international community should prioritize the issue of detainees and those forcibly disappeared in the prisons of the Syrian regime, as well as the importance of continuing to provide humanitarian support to Syrians everywhere.
For his part, the Qatari minister affirmed Qatar’s support for the Syrians and its hope that their suffering will end and their aspirations will be realized. He expressed Qatar’s support for advancing the political process with serious steps towards a political solution based on international resolutions, particularly UN Resolution 2254.
