The Head of the Syrian Negotiating Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, met in New York with His Excellency the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, yesterday, Tuesday, where the two sides discussed various aspects of the current situation in Syria, and the foundations of the political process for the transitional phase.

The Head of the SNC spoke about the need to urgently support the Syrians to secure their humanitarian and economic needs, noting that the Syrian regime has left the Syrian state destroyed, weak and looted. He also stressed the importance of the international community contributing to achieving sustainable political stability in Syria, through a serious and participatory political process, starting with the formation of a transitional governing body that represents the Syrians without excluding any party, and holding a national conference that establishes a new phase, including drafting a constitution by a specialized committee, to be presented to a public referendum, leading to fair elections under the supervision of the United Nations.

Dr. Jamous indicated the readiness of the SNC and its components to work and cooperate with the political administration in Damascus, while stressing the need not to exclude any Syrian party. He also stressed the importance of discussing the issue of lifting sanctions in conjunction with the political process, which would enable the Syrian people to secure their urgent needs. He pointed out that the Syrians will work to establish funds to support the families of martyrs and detainees released from the regime’s prisons, calling for international support for these funds. Discussions also took place around Resolution 2254 as a roadmap for a political solution in Syria, as this resolution provides a framework for achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people and building their free, democratic, and modern state.
