The head of the Syrian Negotiating Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, held a meeting yesterday (Friday) in Paris with the French Special Envoy to Syria, Ambassador Jean-François Guillaume, and discussed with him the Syrian situation on the political, security and economic levels, and the necessity of raising the ceiling of European pressure to resume the political process.

During the meeting, which was attended by Abdul Ahad Estifou and Ibrahim Berro, the fixed goals of the European strategy towards the Syrian issue were emphasized, as well as the importance of raising the ceiling of pressure on the Syrian regime to force it to resume the stalled political process and implement international resolutions, and the importance of France’s position supporting this direction in the European Commission and the UN Security Council.

The head of the SNC reviewed the deteriorating security and economic situation in Syria, the continuation of war and chaos in many areas, the continued violence of the regime and its use of its war machine to kill civilians, the complete refusal of refugees to think about returning due to the security situation and the regime’s continuation of the same practices, the significant deterioration of the economic situation and its approach to a catastrophic level, the regime’s indifference, as well as the practices of the de facto authorities in northeastern Syria, and the increasing humanitarian need in all of Syria due to the arrival of a large number of Syrian refugees fleeing Lebanon.

He spoke about the cases of security summons and arrests that some refugees who were forced to return from Lebanon are exposed to, as well as the extremely poor conditions for those who remained there, the lack of any aid reaching them, and the discrimination of the authorities in Lebanon in distributing aid and not giving Syrians there any consideration in this matter.

Dr. Jamous stressed the necessity of not granting the Syrian regime any political, diplomatic, financial or even moral support before it proves its commitment to a comprehensive political solution, and proceeds with implementing international resolution 2254 strictly and completely, with the necessity of addressing any negative effects on the Syrian people as a result of the sanctions.
