On Tuesday, the Syrian Negotiation Commission delegation, currently on a visit to New York, held a significant meeting with Deputy Ambassador Sandra Jens Landy from the Danish Permanent Mission to the United Nations. The discussion focused on the latest developments in the political process concerning Syria, the positions of various nations, and the critical importance of adhering to United Nations resolutions related to the Syrian crisis.
The delegation included Attorney Tarek Al-Kurdi, Head of the Legal Office; Alise Mufarraj, Chair of the Committee on Detainees; and Fadwa Ojily, a member of the Commission. They addressed the Syrian regime’s persistent obstruction of the political solution and its outright refusal to implement internationally agreed-upon resolutions, particularly UN Resolution 2254. The delegation underscored the necessity for the international community to actively support the implementation of this resolution, emphasizing that no party should be allowed to evade or delay compliance. They asserted that this commitment is essential for achieving justice and sustainable stability in Syria.
The Commission members also raised various pressing political, legal, and humanitarian issues, including the plight of detainees and those who have been forcibly disappeared. They discussed the vital role and responsibility of the international community in addressing these challenges.
Significant concerns were expressed regarding the risks faced by Syrian refugees in Lebanon, particularly their fears of returning to Syria, where many face repression and arrest. The delegation highlighted the dire conditions endured by those remaining in Lebanon and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
In conclusion, the delegation emphasized the critical need for increased humanitarian and relief aid for all Syrians, especially in northwestern Syria, which is currently experiencing extremely challenging circumstances. The call for action reflects the Commission’s commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of the Syrian people amidst ongoing turmoil.
