Dr. Jamous: The Political Solution is an Indispensable International Principle
September 28, 2024
The delegation of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, led by the Commission’s President Dr. Badr Jamous, met yesterday (Friday) in New York with the Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Nuh Yilmaz, to discuss the current developments regarding the Syrian issue and the importance of a political solution. They emphasized the necessity of supporting efforts that would pave the way for a comprehensive political solution in Syria based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.
During the meeting, which took place within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly sessions, both sides discussed the current regional and international political situation, the latest developments in the Syrian political process, and the importance of joint action for the benefit of both countries and peoples. They stressed the need to adhere to international resolutions, especially the Geneva Communiqué and UN Resolutions 2254 and 2118, and to establish mechanisms for their full and strict implementation, preventing any party from procrastinating or evading the obligations imposed upon them by these resolutions.
The President of the Commission emphasized the futility and ineffectiveness of all attempts to rehabilitate the Syrian regime without a political solution, pointing to the failed experiences of some countries that did not yield any benefit and did not compel the regime to change its behavior. On the contrary, these attempts led the regime to believe that it could turn back the clock to before 2011 without accountability.
The meeting also addressed the conditions of Syrians in Turkey, the importance of providing support to the most vulnerable groups, and the commitment of the Commission and other Syrian opposition institutions to coordinate with the Turkish side for the benefit of both peoples and countries.
