President of the Commission Participates in a Political Seminar for Research Centers
Dr. Jamous: The Political Future of Syria is Linked to the Implementation of International Resolutions
October 26, 2024
The President of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, participated today (Saturday) in a political seminar organized by the Center for International Relations and Diplomacy and the Jisour Research Center, where he spoke about the political future of Syria and the scenarios for normalization in the context of diplomatic engagement.
During the seminar held in Istanbul, attended by a number of researchers and specialists in political and international affairs, the President of the Commission emphasized that the political future of Syria must fulfill the aspirations of the Syrians who revolted and made numerous sacrifices over the past fourteen years to achieve it, aiming for a state of citizenship and law for all Syrians.
He stressed that Syria’s political future is closely linked to the outcomes of international resolutions and United Nations decisions, from the Geneva Statement to UN resolutions 2118 and 2254, which affirm the necessity of political transition and the creation of suitable conditions for the return of refugees and the achievement of justice. He pointed out that this requires the concerted efforts of local and international parties to achieve a lasting, comprehensive, and stable peace.
Regarding attempts at normalization with the Syrian regime, he noted that all initiatives so far have yielded nothing for the countries involved; rather, the Syrian regime has refused to respond to the demands of countries offering normalization in exchange for progress in the political solution. Dr. Jamous continued, “The regime continues to evade and maneuver around all Arab promises and demands.” He added that on the European and Western fronts, these countries remain steadfast and reject normalization in any form until they see concrete, clear, and serious steps from the Syrian regime in the political process. He pointed out that normalization can only bear fruit under conditions that guarantee the rights of the Syrian people, requiring genuine steps in the political process and the full and strict implementation of resolution 2254, as well as the release of detainees, clarification of the fate of the forcibly disappeared, and ensuring the safe return of displaced persons and refugees, which can only be achieved through the implementation of political transition.
