A delegation from the Syrian Negotiation Commission held a meeting in New York today (Monday) with Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz. They discussed several key issues related to the Syrian crisis, primarily focusing on advancing the political process, the files concerning detainees and the forcibly disappeared, as well as accountability and transitional justice.

The delegation included the head of the legal office at the commission, lawyer Tarek Al-Kurdi; the head of the detainees committee, Alise Mufarraj; commission member Fadwa Ojily; and the coalition representative at the United Nations, Mariam Halabi.

The discussion during the meeting revolved around the general situation in the region and its multifaceted impacts on Middle Eastern countries, the stalled Syrian political process, and Syrian refugees. They emphasized the need to mitigate the catastrophic negative impacts and risks that refugees may face. The two sides also discussed the necessity of finding pressure mechanisms to address the issues of detainees and the forcibly disappeared.

The commission’s delegation expressed its appreciation for Turkey’s position, which insists on a comprehensive political solution in Syria based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 and other international resolutions related to the Syrian issue.
