During his meeting today, Thursday, with the Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union for Syria, Mr. Michael Unmacht, the head of the Syrian Negotiating Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, stressed the need for urgent international action to push the political process forward in accordance with international resolutions, and to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2254 immediately, fully and strictly.

During the meeting, which took place in Istanbul and was attended by the Political Advisor in the European Union Delegation, Ms. Cecile Candata, and Mr. Piet Blond, the Head of the Commission spoke about the field situation in Syria, and the Commission’s support for the presence of a leadership in Aleppo from technocrats to facilitate the city’s affairs and its administration. He also spoke about the conditions of Syrian refugees in Turkey and Lebanon, the suffering of internally displaced persons in the camps, and the poor humanitarian conditions they are living in due to the lack of aid and the Syrian regime’s control over a lot of international aid, looting it, and depriving Syrians of it.

Dr. Jamous stressed that there is no problem between the Syrian opposition and the rest of the Syrian people, whether they are loyalists or members of the Baath Party, and that the biggest problem is with the Syrian regime and its head who destroyed Syria and unleashed the killing of the Syrian people, pointing out that the Commission is in contact with all Syrian sects, especially the Alawites, and sending them messages reassuring them that the problem is with the regime and not with them, as well as the reassurances sent to the Syrian Kurds. He reiterated the Commission’s permanent readiness to move forward with a complete political process on the four baskets that are consistent with UN resolutions 2254, and the Commission’s non-acceptance of the Constitutional Committee alone, after the regime has manipulated it for years, but rather the political process must be carried out in full according to what was agreed upon for the solution internationally.
