Discussing ways to increase the effectiveness of the European Union's role
The head of the Negotiating Commission meets with the Spanish envoy to Syria
November 8, 2024
The head of the Syrian Negotiating Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, discussed in a virtual meeting with the Spanish envoy to Syria and Yemen, Mr. Miguel Moro Aguilar, the European Union’s strategy towards Syria and how to increase the effectiveness of this role, stressing that achieving a political solution in Syria will overcome some of the challenges affecting the Middle East and Europe, and will end others because many of the problems are linked to the Syrian regime.
During the virtual meeting (yesterday, Thursday), Dr. Jamous spoke about the results of the meetings held in Brussels regarding the European Union’s strategy towards Syria, and the importance of a unified European position towards the Syrian regime and the political solution, indicating that there is consensus among member states to address some challenges, including the issue of Captagon trade linked to the Syrian regime.
The discussion addressed the options that can be put forward to move the stalled political process, and the need for the international community to combine its efforts at all levels in order to find mechanisms to move this process forward, pressure the Syrian regime and its allies to comply with international will, and implement Security Council Resolution 2254.
The Commission’s strategy for the coming period was reviewed, and work with Syrian civil society organizations on unifying visions and joint coordination for a political solution was discussed, while the situation in Lebanon was discussed, especially the situation of Syrian refugees remaining in Lebanon or those who were forced to return to Syria, and the risks they face whether in Lebanon or Syria, and the great difficulties they face in terms of lack of aid and lack of international interest in their issue, and the need for the High Commissioner for Refugees to move to ensure their security and assist them by all possible means.
The two parties agreed to meet soon to enhance communication and coordination regarding the political solution, with the meeting to be held at the Commission’s office in Geneva or in the Spanish capital, Madrid.
