Meeting of the President of the Commission with the UN Envoy to Syria
October 18, 2024
The President of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, urged the UN envoy to Syria, Mr. Geir Pedersen, yesterday (Thursday) to establish a monitoring mechanism to ensure that Syrians returning from Lebanon due to the ongoing war are not arrested. He emphasized the necessity for the Commission to participate in this mechanism and requested that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees disclose whether there are any guarantees for the return of these individuals.
During the meeting, which was attended by Commission members Tarek Al-Kurdi, Mohannad Daliqan, and the President of the Commission’s office in Geneva, Hussein Sabagh, they reviewed the regional and international political situation and its implications for the Syrian issue. They highlighted the continued evasion by the regime and its supporters of their commitments regarding the implementation of international resolutions, stressing the need for the UN to activate this file because true and sustainable peace in the region cannot be achieved without resolving the Syrian issue through the full and strict implementation of UN Resolution 2254.
He spoke about the importance of providing support to Syrian refugees who are unable to return from Lebanon to Syria due to the risks associated with their return. Additionally, he emphasized the need for essential, monitored, and transparent humanitarian relief for refugees returning to Syria, ensuring that the regime is not allowed to exploit the aid and assistance provided to them.
