President of the Commission Sends Urgent Message to Pedersen
Protection of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon and Non-Interference
September 30, 2024
The President of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Dr. Bader Jamous, has issued an urgent message to the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir Pedersen, urging intervention from relevant international bodies to alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugees and ensure their protection in Lebanon. This situation has escalated following the death of the leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.
In his message, Dr. Jamous expressed profound concern over the ongoing hostilities in Lebanon between Israeli occupation forces and the Hezbollah militia. He emphasized that these conflicts have a detrimental effect on the lives of civilians, particularly the most vulnerable—Syrian refugees and others in similar circumstances—who have endured difficult conditions for an extended period. The recent events have further intensified their suffering. He cautioned against the systematic assaults on Syrian refugees and their means of livelihood, especially in the aftermath of the Hezbollah leader’s death.
Dr. Jamous strongly condemned the Syrian regime’s persistent obstruction of the political process and its refusal to implement critical resolutions, particularly 2118 and 2254, along with other relevant resolutions and statements concerning the Syrian cause. He highlighted that the regime continues to violate its own constitution and prevent Syrian citizens from returning to their homeland. Additionally, reports have emerged of the regime’s authorities arresting several refugees returning from Lebanon and relocating them to shelters far from their original homes and the places from which they were displaced. Some have been placed in perilous areas, such as frontline zones in Idlib province. He warned of the regime’s systematic strategy to create a conducive environment for demographic change.
