A delegation from the Syrian Negotiation Commission met today (Thursday) with a high-level delegation from UN Women in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings. They discussed the latest developments in the political process in Syria and various issues related to Syrian women, their role, and their empowerment.

The meeting was attended by Commission members Mr. Anas al-Abda and Ms. Dima Moussa, and MS, Mariam Jalabi SOC’s representative at the United Nations, while the UN Women delegation included Ms. Payevi Kanisto, Head of the Peace, Security, and Resilience Office at UN Women; Ms. Sarah Douglas, Deputy Head of the Peace and Security Office; Ms. Heba Zayan, Regional Advisor on Women, Peace, and Security in Arab States; and Ms. Jihan Ahmed Abu Taleb, Specialist in Comprehensive Peace Operations Policies.

The Commission’s delegation reviewed the latest developments in the Syrian political process, the regime’s obstruction of it, and its refusal to implement international resolutions, particularly Resolution 2254. They reiterated the Commission’s commitment to a political solution and its responsiveness to international resolutions concerning the Syrian issue, highlighting the necessity of addressing the file of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons as non-negotiable issues, and the importance of achieving justice for the Syrian people.

The delegation provided an overview of the sacrifices of Syrian women and their central role in opposing the Syrian regime and dictatorship, as well as their ongoing efforts to ensure a dignified and free future for generations. They discussed the risks women have taken to achieve this goal, their contributions to political movements, the formation of civil society organizations and parties, and their significant role in the media, in addition to outlining the main challenges and obstacles facing Syrian women, which require support to help them overcome.

The delegation spoke about the Commission’s diligent efforts to strongly and effectively support women’s political participation and its commitment to correcting the stereotypical image of Syrian women, showcasing their true image as essential leaders capable of influence, and ensuring their representation in all political processes. They also supported initiatives to train and empower women in leadership and political skills, recognizing their important role in building peace and stability.

The UN Women delegation shared some experiences the organization has had in many conflict zones around the world and its role in peace negotiations there. They emphasized the importance of supporting women’s participation in political and social life as a fundamental element in achieving the desired change and building a better future, as well as the necessity of amplifying their voices and roles, as they are effective in achieving justice and equality.
