Dr. Bader Jamous, President of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to the full and strict implementation of UN Resolutions 2254 and 2118, as well as all international resolutions related to the Syrian issue, to achieve a political transition in Syria.

This statement was made during the meeting of the Syrian Negotiation Commission delegation, which is visiting New York as part of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir Pedersen, and his team, yesterday, Wednesday.

During the meeting, Dr. Jamous emphasized that it is unacceptable for the political solution to remain hostage to the whims of the Syrian regime. He stressed that all international parties must exert pressure through their means, within the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly, to compel all parties to fully comply with and implement international resolutions without evasion.

He reiterated the Commission’s responsiveness and readiness to proceed with the implementation of international resolutions to achieve a clear and comprehensive political change that fulfills the legitimate aspirations and demands of the Syrian people. He called for action within the General Assembly to find mechanisms that compel the regime to advance the political solution as stipulated in these resolutions.

Dr. Jamous pointed out that the Commission’s stance on the issue of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons remains unchanged, considering it a non-negotiable issue that the regime refuses to address. He called on the United Nations and its affiliated institutions to take responsibility in this matter by exerting pressure for the release of all detainees in the Syrian regime’s prisons and security branches and revealing the fate of the forcibly disappeared.

He stated that the Syrian regime is obstructing the political process in general and continues to refuse to follow up on the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, using excuses unrelated to the Syrian people. He highlighted the importance of resuming meetings in Geneva with a mechanism and timeline to ensure tangible and real results in drafting the constitution.

The President of the Commission expressed genuine concerns among Syrians about potential shifts in the positions of some countries away from UN Resolution 2254, which is considered the only international path capable of achieving stability, security, and peaceful political transition.

He discussed the concept of a safe and neutral environment, emphasizing that this issue should be the result of the political process, to be carried out by the Transitional Governing Body as stipulated in UN Resolution 2254. He stressed that this issue cannot be proposed prematurely, as no entity can guarantee such an environment without a political solution.
