Syrian Negotiation Commission Meeting Statement
SNC held its meeting on the 5th of August 2023 virtually, in the presence of all its components attending from inside and outside Syria. The meeting discussed the latest developments inside Syria, and the challenges that the Syrian people are facing at all levels inside Syria due to the deteriorating economic and security situation.
The meeting touched upon the latest political developments as well as the regional and international developments related to the Syrian file. In this regard, SNC assessed the Arab and the quadripartite tracks with the regime, and SNC expresses its deep sorrow that the regime did not respond to the Arab and others’ demands, that would lead to the achievement of political solution. This has increased the frustration of the Syrian people.
SNC also focused on the dire humanitarian situation that affects the Syrian people in all regions with increasing numbers suffering from hunger and poverty. SNC reaffirms that the first step to actually overcome this catastrophe lies in the implementation of the political solution in accordance with the operative and spirit of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254, which allows the Syrian people to make the necessary efforts to get out of this situation, and that the security harassment to those who express the pain of Syrian people will not bear any fruit, but only in raising the level of popular anger at this disaster and its causers.
SNC affirmed its commitment to the political resolution, and its steadfast position on the full implementation of UNSCR 2254 (2015), that leads to a real political transition, which is the guarantor of eliminating terrorism, achieving civil peace, preserving the unity of Syrian people and their land, and empowering Syria’s commitment to strengthening Arab, regional and international national security. SNC stresses also that all approaches aiming at bypassing UNSCR 2254 will prolong the conflict and deepen the tragedy of the Syrians.
The meeting discussed also the challenges the Syrian refugees are facing, as well as the racism against them, and violations of their basic rights. SNC affirmed the importance of preserving their security and safety in the countries they fled to seeking asylum, and protecting them in accordance with the UN human rights, refugee agreements and international law which prohibits refoulement. SNC also thanks
all countries hosting the Syrian refugees, and looks forward to collaborated efforts for the voluntary and safe return of refugees to their homeland and places of residence from which they were displaced.
SNC meeting also discussed the reports and activities of the Presidency and the SNC committees during the past year, especially the Detainees Committee as this file stands as a top priority for SNC while the regime refuses to interact with it despite national and international demands for the release of all detainees. SNC welcomes the UN General Assembly Resolution No. (77/301) establishing an independent institution focusing on missing persons including those forcibly disappeared in Syria, and affirms its support and constructive cooperation with it. SNC discussed the Constitutional Committee and the challenges it faces to complete the tasks assigned to it, The work of the Legal Committee, the Elections Committee, and the internal conditions of SNC were reviewed with stressing the importance of following up on activating its offices and committees and providing the necessary support for them to achieve their missions.
The challenges that we all face require the highest levels of responsibility, unity and steadfastness in the strategic goals of our people to achieve their freedom, dignity and justice. Those challenges also require full collaboration and coordination between the Syrian people and active organisations working to support the Syrian people rights, the importance of the vital role of women and young Syrians in the political process, the necessity of putting milestones for the future of the Syrian children and the coming generations, building a strong interactive and solid relationship with the civil society, as this strengths the bridges of communication with all segments and components of the Syrian society.
Mercy and glory to the martyrs, freedom to the detainees and kidnapped, and the safe and voluntary return of the displaced, and victory to our great people.
