The head of the Syrian Negotiating Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, reviewed with the official in charge of the Syria file at the European Union Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Mr. Mattia Toaldo, the discussions that took place in the European Union Council recently regarding the European Union strategy towards Syria.

Dr. Jamous discussed the conditions of Syrian refugees around the world and the need for the European Union to support projects that concern youth and refugees.

The head of the Commission stressed during the meeting held at the Commission’s office in Geneva today (Thursday) the need for the European Union to remain steadfast in supporting the comprehensive political transition in Syria in line with UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254, the Geneva Statement, and other international resolutions because the situation in Syria is tragic and is getting worse on the security, political, and humanitarian levels.

He discussed with Mr. Toaldo the situation of Syrian refugees fleeing Lebanon, and the risks they face if they are forced to return to Syria, such as new displacement, interrogation and arrest, or the discrimination, racism and lack of assistance they face if they remain in Lebanon, and the need for the UNHCR to do its work without discrimination, and to allocate more assistance to Syrian refugees in Syria and Lebanon alike.

The discussions touched on the deteriorating living conditions inside Syria, the economic situation that is deteriorating without limits, and the need for supporting countries to provide more assistance to Syrians everywhere, especially in the northwestern regions of Syria, where the largest number of displaced Syrians fleeing the regime’s violence are concentrated.

The head of the Commission also reviewed what the Commission is doing at the international political level, and the features of its future plans and activities at the Arab and international levels.
