Head of the SNC in an interview with Al Jazeera: The Security Council agrees to support a serious political process
The head of the Syrian Negotiating Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, said that most members of the Security Council agree to support the Syrians in building their state, helping them secure the humanitarian and economic situation, rebuilding Syria, and achieving sustainable political stability, and that there should be a serious political process through the formation of a transitional governing body that includes an alliance of all Syrians and moving forward with a Syrian-Syrian political process in Damascus, during which a national conference is held in which all Syrians participate, from which a committee emerges to write the new constitution that will lead the Syrians to fair elections under the supervision of the United Nations.
Dr. Jamous expressed during an interview with Al Jazeera yesterday, Tuesday, the readiness of the SNC to work with the political administration in Damascus and with all components of the Syrian people that are not currently represented, without excluding anyone, indicating that part of the SNC present in Damascus, and the rest will join them soon, and there will be many meetings with all parties.
Regarding the position of Resolution 2254, he stressed that it is based on several points, and after the fall of the regime and its end, the other party fell, and those who will discuss the fate of the country are all one party in order to form a transitional governing body that represents the Syrians, and after that work will be done to hold a national conference and a founding committee, which will form a committee to draft the constitution from experts and legal experts, and present it to a general referendum, then reach fair elections, and all these points are present in Resolution 2254, indicating that issuing a new amended resolution will take a long time, and Syria cannot wait.
The head of the SNC stressed that the Syrian resolution will be Syrian-Syrian, and that the role of the United Nations is to help the Syrians and facilitate dialogues between them only. The dialogue will be between the political administration in Damascus and the negotiating Commission and all the Syrian components and civil society, as everyone must be part of this in-depth national dialogue to reach the building of a Syria that enjoys sustainable political stability.
He pointed out that the SNC is moving to hold its meetings and is active in Damascus, and it had a meeting in Damascus with the international envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, and another with the representative of the European Union, and other European envoys. He stressed that all delegations come to Syria open to meeting with all parties, and that the Commission hopes that there will be a vision for a unified Syria free of differences, because this day is the day of unity and joint action. Dr. Jamous explained that all representatives of countries affirm national unity, and that Resolution 2254 is still the best regarding the political transition process through the formation of a participatory transitional government, a national conference, a constitution, and elections. He stressed the importance of having an elected government that derives its legitimacy from the spectrum of the Syrian people, represents Syria in all international forums, adheres to international agreements, and works to achieve sustainable stability that provides an attractive environment for the return of refugees, development, and reconstruction.
